Race Recap

West Michigan Sand Dragway (WMSD) opened their 2007 season with back-to-back weekend races on May 26 and June 2. Here is a class by class look at the action from both events.

Top Fuel

There were two TF competitors at the May 26 event. Bob Piunti and Rob Schyett brought their blown, alcohol dragsters out to do battle. Rob Schyett dropped everyone’s jaws with a track record pass on his first time down the track for the season with a 2.628/126mph run. Congrats go out to Rob, Scott,  Bob, and the Bad Frog team on the great pass. Bob Piunti jumped the lights in the first session, but came back with a 2.81 in the second qualifying round. The final round between the two entries ended up with Bob Piunti taking the win with a 2.84 while Rob had problems and had to shut off early. Top Fuel was not contested on June 2.

Top Eliminator

On May 26, Troy Turnock’s Fiat and Brian Ambs’ altered did battle in the Top Eliminator class. Troy qualified number one with a dead-on 3.00 while Brian ran 3.19. After a staging red light on Brian’s part, Troy was awarded the class win. The June 2 race saw Turnock return, but this time he had a different opponent in Nick Vanderputte’s Procharger-equipped small block Chevy dragster. Troy would break after the second round of qualifying giving Vanderputte the class win on a single. Nick ran a best of 3.15 on the day.

Pro Index

Matt Peel drove his “Desert Storm” funny Jeep to the Pro Index title on May 26. Peel defeated Ryan Poortenga, substituting for his dad Jay in the “Drag Nasty” funny Jeep. June 2 saw Peel return to the final round, but come up just short in a close race against Dawn Turnock in her blown Fiat. Peel’s final round finishes put him 2nd in the Pro Point series and give him a lead in Pro Index points.
