The sand drag world has been busy over the first part of the 2013 season, as evidenced by my absence from this column the last couple of months. West coast racers had a great choice of events to hit with five races from the end of January through the end of April. Obviously with the Summer heat, they will take a few months off and get back at it in early October. The final two west coast points races will be action packed with racers vying for both the NSRA & SCSDA series championships. NSDN will be there covering all angles.

Avenal Sand Drags in Avenal, CA played host to the fifth event of the 2013 NSRA Quality Aircraft Care Sand Drag Series. Racers from as far away as Washington, Oregon, and Phoenix made the haul to Central California as an exceptional group of racers gathered to battle it out for the hardware. This led to some of the best west coast racing seen in a long time. Read on for the full recap.

The Southern California Sand Drag Association continued their 2013 campaign with the April Fuels event in Mid-April. This event also served as Race Four for the NSRA Quality Aircraft Care point series. Sunshine and warm temperatures turned into cloud cover with cooler temps on Sunday race day, but that made for some great conditions for comfortable sand drag racing. Here’s a run down of this event.

Mother’s Day Weekend is always a big start to the sand drag racing season in Michigan, and this year was no exception. Traditionally, this weekend sees the Season Opening Test and Tune Day at West Michigan Sand Dragway on Saturday with the Spring Hill Climb at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes the day after. Here’s a rundown on the happenings from the two days of action.

Rain was the big winner this weekend at Atoka Motorsports Park’s regular May point series event. An unforeseen Oklahoma rain shower dumped a ton of rain causing the race to be cancelled after the Trophy classes were completed. Tim Feuerhelm not only won the Pro 1 Cars trophy class, but he also ran his Personal Best ET with a 3.56 with his Motorcycle-powered Dragster. The Martin Racing father-son team swept the Pro 1 Quads class as James Martin put away his son and 2012 MASD class champion Luke in the final round. A decision on a points makeup for this event will be announced at a later date. Up next for Atoka Motorsports Park is the 15th Annual Heartland Nationals Memorial Day Weekend April 24-26.

Atoka Motorsports Park in Atoka, OK is making preparations for the 15th Annual Heartland Nationals on May 24-26. This year's event will follow the typical format as in previous years, including the traditional Quick 16 Cars/Quads classes on Friday night. Top Eliminator will pay $1500 to win & $500 for a runner-up based on an 8-car field. This will be the Season Opening event for the 2013 Mid-America Sand Drag Series. After a two week break, the 2013 NSRA Quality Aircraft Care Sand Drag Series was back in action with the yearly trip to Avenal Sand Drags in Avenal, CA. This was a great race with competitors trying to gain as many points as they can before the five month Summer break.
